New Delhi: A probe to establish how an American managed to carry a gun in his luggage from the Delhi airport to Chennai says officials in Phoenix airport in Arizona failed to detect the weapon.
The Bureau of Civil Aviation Security ordered a probe into alleged security lapses at New Delhi’s IGI Airport where Sellmeyer Larry was detained on June 11 with an Austrian-made pistol, 35 bullets and three magazines from his baggage.
Larry allegedly told security officials at the New Delhi airport he had carried the pistol when he flew into Chennai from New Delhi on May 27.
The bureau’s probe report says the gun should have been detected at the Phoenix airport in the US, from where the American boarded a flight, should have detected the gun.
It also says Customs officials at Delhi airport should have detected the gun and ammunition when he landed.
The report absolves GMR, saying the Delhi airport operator is not at fault as the modern online baggage checking system involves no physical monitoring of luggage.
The gun was detected at Chennai airport as it employs manual checks on baggage.
