CHENNAI: A pair of lovers from the Andaman Islands eloped and arrived in the city on Tuesday. Police, who at first detained them after the girl’s parents lodged a complaint, allowed the couple to go their way as wished by the nineteen-year-old girl.Police said Muthu Liakath Ali (26) from Tirunelveli district had been working in Port Blair as a driver for a travel company. He fell in love with his neighbour Alka Mary (19), a Plus Two student a year ago, police said.The girl’s parents Robert, a head clerk in a veterinary office in Port Blair, and mother Josephin D’Souza, a staff nurse in a government hospital, were against their daughter’s relationship. The young couple decided to elope and took a ship to Chennai on the evening of March 31.On finding their daughter missing, the girl’s parents immediately took a flight from Port Blair and arrived in Chennai on Monday evening. They then lodged a complaint with the Harbour police here on Tuesday.On Tuesday, the lovers, who arrived by ship at Chennai Port, were brought to the police station. The girl informed the police that she was a major and it was with her acceptance that the couple had come to Chennai. After the police heard her version, they allowed the couple to leave for his hometown. The girl’s parents also returned home.
