At least 11 people have been arrested in connection with the alleged gang rape of a 16-year-old girl in Andhra Pradesh’s Visakhapatnam. The minor, who belonged from Odisha, and worked as a house help in Visakhapatnam, was allegedly gang raped by 13 people, two of whom are still at large.
The 11 accused who have been arrested, were produced before the court and were subsequently sent to a 14-day remand. Special teams have been deployed to nab the remaining two accused in the case, the police said on Tuesday.
The Case
During the investigation, police found the minor girl was allegedly raped by 13 men, including nine photographers, over a week.
According to Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), Srinivasa Rao, the victim’s family shifted to Vishakhapatnam from Odisha some time ago, where her father works as a watchman in an apartment, while he worked as a domestic help.
On December 17, the victim went to a hotel room with her boyfriend, where he raped her. Later his friend came to the hotel, and also raped the minor, the official said.
After being raped by her boyfriend and his friend, the victim reached the RK Beach in Visakhapatnam to die by suicide. However, at the beach, a local man who takes photographs of tourists started a conversation with her and tricked her to accompany her to a lodge, where he raped her.
The photographer later took her to another room, where eight to nine other photographers raped her for three days from December 20 to 22, the DCP said.
The girl somehow managed to escape from their clutches in the meantime and left for Odisha.
She was found in Odisha on December 25 when her father had filed a missing complaint report, police said.
Andhra govt Faces Heat Over Incident
Both Congress and the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) have slammed the ruling Yuvajana Sramika Rythu Congress Party (YSRCP) government for ‘failing to protect women’ in the state after the incident.
Condemning the incident in Visakhapatnam, former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu put up a post on ‘X’ criticising the Jagan Mohan government.
“My head hangs in shame, and my heart aches at this heinous crime in Vizag. Criminals continue to hurt our daughters and sisters without fearing the law because they know there is no law and order in a YSRCP-ruled Andhra Pradesh. Forget women empowerment, YS Jagan’s vision seems to only empower criminals who prey on women,” Naidu said in a post on ‘X’.
