A man was killed in Andhra Pradesh’s Anantapur district after a high-speed car hit his bike and travelled 18 kilometres with his body on the vehicle’s roof. The incident happened on the national highway near Kothapalli in Atmakuru Mandal on Sunday night. The driver fled the scene and is still at large, however, a murder case has been registered, and efforts are underway to apprehend the driver, police said on Tuesday.
The deceased has been identified as 35-year-old Jinne Erra Swamy, a tractor mechanic from Cholasamudram village.
According to police, Swamy was returning home when a high-speed car (Innova) hit his bike. The collision was so intense that Swamy was flung several feet high in the air and landed on top of the car.
The driver of the car continued for approximately 18 kilometres without stopping, eventually coming to a halt at Hanimireddypalli before fleeing the scene.
Swamy had, meanwhile, succumbed to his injuries.
Authorities are currently piecing together the full sequence of events surrounding the incident, police said.
“Upon receiving reports of the accident involving an Innova vehicle, law enforcement officers promptly responded and commenced an investigation. However, the body of the deceased biker was not initially located at the scene,” said Sub-Inspector Atmakuru Muneer Ahmed.
He said that the driver, whose identity remains unknown at this time, abandoned the vehicle after sounding an alarm.
“Nonetheless, authorities have obtained relevant details, including the vehicle’s registration number, and have activated the mobile phone found within the vehicle for further investigation,” the SI added.
