The 9th men's Asia Cup begins in Ipoh, Malaysia, from August 24, with the winners guaranteed a place in the 2014 FIH World Cup.

India will look to scale the hockey summit in Asia once again and in the process earn themselves a place in the 2014 FIH World Cup as the 9th men's Asia Cup gets going on the astro-turf in Ipoh, Malaysia, from August 24.

India, World Cup winners in 1975, have lifted the Asia Cup twice in 2003 and 2007 while finishing runners up on four occasions in the history of the tournament that began in 1982. But fans back home will look at nothing less than a top finish on the podium this time with a World Cup qualification at stake for the continental champions from Asia.

India had a chance to qualify for the World Cup with a top three finish in the FIH Hockey World League semi-finals in Rotterdam. But the team returned with a poor fifth place in the event, which now leaves them with just one last chance in Ipoh to sneak into the 2014 World Cup to be held at The Hague, Netherlands.

Format:

The eight-team competition will see teams divided into Pool A and B consisting four each. The top two finishers form each of the pool at the end of the league stage will face each other in the semis.

Schedule:

Pool A: Pakistan, Malaysia, Japan, Chinese-Taipei

Pool B: South Korea, India, Bangladesh, Oman
