SALEM: An assistant headmaster of a government-aided school here has been arrested on the basis of a complaint lodged by a Class XI student claiming that the former had intimidated him to kill a teacher of the institution. Although police on Saturday night booked 53-year-old Tamil Mani, the assistant headmaster of Gokulanatha Hindu Mahajana Higher Secondary School, for criminal intimidation (including threat to cause death), credibility of the complaint was still under investigation.Abdullah (name changed as he is a minor), who is studying in the school, had lodged a complaint at the Town Police Station alleging that a few days ago Mani had given him Rs 2,000 and asked to “push down to death” his English teacher Sasikala from the first floor of the school building. Abdullah claimed that when he refused to heed the assistant head master, the latter threatened him with dire consequences on November 21.Fearing harassment, he did not go to school from the next day. His family members claimed that Abdullah had tried to hang himself to death in the bathroom a couple of days ago and when questioned, he had revealed about Mani’s threat. Subsequently, he went to the police station and submitted a complaint against Mani. The police summoned Mani and other teachers including head mistress Shanthi for an inquiry. A section of the teachers said that the assistant head master and the English teacher were at loggerheads due to another dispute, which was investigated by the police last year. It was also alleged that Abdullah was a pet student of Sasikala. Inspector P K Selvakumar, who heard both parties, later arrested Mani and produced him before the Judicial Magistrate I for obtaining judicial remand.Mani has been booked under Section 294 (Obscene Act), Section 323 (Voluntarily Causing Hurt) and Section 506 (2) — Criminal Intimidation, of the IPC.
