Greens party blames Australia's federal government for the situation.

New Delhi: The protests over Australian Federal Police's handling of Mohammad Haneef's case are gaining momentum.

The country's Greens party says the police have become an "international laughing stock" and blamed the federal government for the situation.

Greens Senator Kerry Nettle alleged that the Howard government was pressurising AFP to tarnish Haneef's reputation in order to keep him under detention at any rate.

"And it had done this to justify the zealous application of its new hardline anti-terrorism laws to the Indian doctor," news agency AP quoted Greens party statement.

"There was tremendous pressure on the government to make sure they got somewhere with this case after holding him for 12 days," Senator Nettle was quoted as saying.

Nettle alleged the pressure made AFP officials "skip over the facts" and make so mistakes in the case."

Senator Nettle said British police were now unfortunately, but understandably, laughing at "the sloppy AFP".

He said Immigration Minister Kevin Andrews' decision to cancel Haneef's working visa must be reviewed.

Haneef had been working at a Queensland hospital for almost a year when he was arrested July 2 as he tried to leave Australia for India. He was charged two weeks later with supporting a terrorist organization for giving his mobile phone SIM card to a second cousin in Britain before coming to Australia.

The cousin has been charged in Britain with withholding information about a terrorist attack in connection to last month's failed plot to set off car bombs in London and at the international airport in Glasgow, Scotland.

A magistrate granted Haneef bail, but the government canceled his visa before he could be released and says he will be taken into immigration custody if he posts bail. He has declined to do so, and is in jail awaiting trial and an appeal against the visa decision.
