Awareness camp for mental health staff
Awareness camp for mental health staff

In the wake of the Satnam Singh issue in which a 25-year-old mentally ill Bihari youth was found dead at the Mental Health Centre in Thiruvananthapuram, the Health Department has decided to conduct awareness sessions in every six months for the mental health staff.

The sessions will deal with the management of violent patients by ensuring their human rights. A Decision in this regard was taken at a meeting convened by the Health Minister last month.

Non-psychiatrist doctors at the health centres will also be given training. The programmes will be conducted every six months so that every new batch of staff will benefit from it, said Dr D Raju, secretary, State Mental Health Authority and State nodal officer for National Mental Health Programme .

The awareness campaign will be practically oriented, specifically targeting those health staff who have to deal with the patients on a day-to day basis. The session will be a platform for them to raise concerns and doubts regarding the handling of the patients and get a practical help,” Raju said.

The programme will be launched at the three mental health centres in Thiruvananthapuram, Thrissur and Kozhikode on October 10, the World Mental Health Day. The sessions will be organised by the District Mental Health Programme in Thrissur and Thiruvananthpuram. In Kozhikode the programme will be held under the Community Mental Health Programme of the Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences.
