Baby found dumped in drum

TIRUCHY: A baby girl was found dead in an empty drum at Chathiram bus stand here on Monday. The baby is believed to be just one-and-a-half-months-old. Sources said the labourers engaged in road laying at the bus stand found the body in an empty tar drum when they resumed work on Monday and immediately alerted the Fort Police.  The police rushed to the spot, retrieved the body and sent it for  postmortem. They said the mother might have abandoned the baby in the drum on Sunday and placed a lid over it. The baby might have died of suffocation.This is the third such incident in Tiruchy in the last two years. One year ago, the body of a newborn was found in a ditch near Uyyankondan canal. Nine months ago, the body of a one-month-old baby girl was found abandoned at the tollgate.
