The panda was named Ao Yun, meaning 'Olympic Games' in Mandarin.

A baby panda has been named 'Olympic Games' after being born on the same day as the opening ceremonies of the 2008 games in Beijing.

Sichuan: Ao Yun, which means 'Olympic Games' in Mandarin, is one of 10 baby pandas to have been born in recent weeks, but the only one whose birthday fell on the auspicious date chosen as the start of the 29th Olympiad - 8 August, 2008.

According to Chinese state television on Wednesday, the panda's mother, 13-year old Fei Fei, gave birth to Ao Yun at the China Giant Panda Protection Centre located in Ya An, Sichuan province.

"The birth of this panda has special meaning," Vice Director of the China Giant Panda Protection Centre, Huang Yan said.

Fei Fei is one of the more than 50 pandas that were evacuated from the Wo Long panda sanctuary in Wenchuan, Sichuan province, following a devastating earthquake that struck in May.

Nearly 70,000 people died in the 12 May quake, considered to be China's worst natural disaster in a generation.
