Bail scam: Relief to Karnataka MLA

Justice Samudrala Govindarajulu of the High Court on Tuesday granted bail to TH Suresh Babu, a Karnataka MLA and follower of tainted mining baron Gali Janardhan Reddy, in the cash-for-bail scam case.

Two cases _ one for entering into a conspiracy and another for paying bribe to secure bail for Janardhan Reddy _ were registered against Suresh Babu. The High Court has granted him bail recently in one of the cases. The judge did not agree with the ACB counsel's argument that the MLA from Kampli in Karnataka could influence witnesses and tamper with evidence if released on bail. The judge directed Suresh Babu to produce two sureties with a bond of Rs 1 lakh each and to surrender his passport to the lower court.

The High Court has already granted bail to suspended judges T Pattabhirama Rao, K Lakshminarasimha Rao and D Prabhakar Rao as well as Karnataka legislator G Somasekhar Reddy and G Dasaratharami Reddy in the bail scam case. It also dismissed the ACB's petition challenging the bail granted to Pattabhirama Rao's son Ravichandra and a junior lawyer, Aditya. The court has reserved its judgment in respect of the bail petition of retired judge TV Chalapati Rao, another accused in the case.
