Bangalore: Monsoon is awaited by Bangaloreans with fervour but rains also bring innumerable issues pertaining to water contamination. Time and again, readers of City Express have expressed their concern about the growing problem. We take a detailed look at a few localities in the city, which have fallen prey to the grim situation. The BWSSB charges Rs 15 for sanitation besides the water consumption charges. But, as far as sanitation is concerned, the situation in Ulsoor looks grim.
“Due to the sewage line remaining clogged for more than a month, sanitation is totally ignored by the residents of Fifth Cross, Someswarapura, Ulsoor. The toilet bowls in several houses have filled up due to a reverse flow. The leaking sewage water has also polluted the ground water,” said Ramani ABS, a resident of Ulsoor. He further added, “The engineer in-charge has turned a deaf ear to the situation. The councillor of the ward has not even bothered to intervene. A disaster awaits the residents as there is a lurking danger of drinking water getting contaminated and diseases breaking out. Will the authorities rescue us if anything goes wrong?”
A similar situation prevails in 2nd Main Sheshadripuram. “Despite writing, petitioning and pleading with concerned officials of BWSSB for the past three months, we still continue to receive contaminated drinking water supply. The source of the contamination is sewage water. We would like to emphasise here that from each household at least two to three members have suffered from diseases and therefore we urge the BWSSB authorities to resolve the problem on war footing basis. This place is 50 years old and the system cannot take the increasing load. Sewage pipes need to be changed, taking into consideration development and growth in this area over the years. Hence let the pipes be changed and buried at least 5 to 6 feet below the ground to withstand frictional load of heavy vehicular traffic,” added Pravin K Mehta, a resident of U P Haven Apartment.
When City Express tried to contact BWSSB officials, they were unavailable for comments. But, hopefully the authorities will take note of such situations and depute their ‘efficient’ officials to look into the issue.
