Batla House case: Discontent in Azamgarh over Shahzad's conviction
Shahzad Ahmed's conviction has come as a huge blow to the residents of the district in Uttar Pradesh.

Azamgarh: The decision of the Saket court in Batla House encounter case in Delhi's Jamia Nagar area has come as a huge disappointment for Azamgarh in Uttar Pradesh. Azamgarh is already facing the charge of being a hotbed of terrorists and the Batla House encounter case and Shahzad Ahmed's conviction has come as a huge blow to the residents of the district in Uttar Pradesh.

They were hoping that the court would acquit Azamgarh resident Shahzad Ahmed, who is suspected to be a member of terror group and has been found guilty of murder and attempt to murder charges in the Batla House encounter. If Ahmed had been let off then it would have meant that those killed after being labelled terrorists would not guilty, say the residents. But the guilty verdict has come as a huge disappointment for them.

Azamgarh has been in the news for its relation with underworld dons Dawood Ibrahim and Abu Salem. Now the district is in the spotlight over the Batla House encounter in which those killed by the Delhi Police team had Azamgarh links.

A corporator in Azamgarh, Mohammad Arif, says that whenever anyone is caught by the police on terror related charges, his life is ruined. Even if he is later proved to be innocent, there is no way he can rebuild his life or get back his lost reputation, says Arif.

Several people in Azamgarh consider Shahzad Ahmed, who belongs to Khalispur village under Bilariaganj police station of Azamgarh, innocent. He has been held guilty killing Delhi Police Inspector MC Sharma and also injuring head constables Balwant Singh and Rajbir Singh by firing on them and then fleeing from the spot. But neither his family nor the villagers are willing to accept that.

His uncle Shahid Zafar say the family will move the High Court. A doctor and social worker Javed said his son Asadullah is also wanted in several bomb blasts. But Javed claims his son is innocent and he too is disappointed after Shahzad was convicted.
