BANGALORE: A public hearing on urban health system organised by Citizens Voluntary Initiative for the City (CIVIC) Bangalore on Thursday, saw people express frustration at the lackadaisical attitude of the BBMP health care centres and the health department.
"I was sent back home when I went to K R Puram General Hospital for my delivery. Doctors asked me to wait for one more day and come next day. After few hours I delivered at home. Anything could have happened to either me or my child. Who would have taken its responsibility?" asked Nagamma (name changed) during the public hearing. Shantamma, another complainant, said that referring patients from one hospital to another has become very common.

"We went to Kengeri health centre, they referred us to Vani Villas Hospital due to the lack of scanning facilities and antenatal check up. Travelling from Kengeri to Vanivilas took nearly two hours and consequently the baby was delivered in the ambulance. Poor patients have to run from pillar to post to get the treatment in government hospitals and BBMP health centres. Patients suffer a lot during this ordeal and finally knock the door of private hospitals."

The residents claimed that despite bringing it to the notice of the BBMP, they have turned a blind eye to this problem.

With falling standards of health care delivery, there is a need of good governance, transparency and grievance redressal cell, it was observed during the hearing.

Regular Meetings'

"There is also a need for more grievance cell and regular public hearing," said E Premdas, CoConvenor Janaarogya Andolana.
