Bhopal remembers victims of gas tragedy
Many victims and NGOs protested the Central government's attitude in punishing Union Carbide and Dow Chemicals.

Bhopal: Several programmes were organised in the city to mark the 21st anniversary of Bhopal gas leak from the Union Carbide factory, considered as one of the "worst industrial disasters of the world".

Many victims along with the NGOs working for the betterment of the Bhopal gas victims, also protested the Central government's "lackadaisical" attitude in "punishing" the company, Union Carbide and Dow Chemicals, from where MIC gas had leaked on the night of December 2 and 3 in 1984, killing over 15,000 people and affecting thousands of others.

Besides seeking the extradition of Warren Anderson of Union Carbide from the US and demanding legal action against him, the victims critisised the government "apathy" in providing relief to people who have been suffering from numerous diseases after the gas leak and compensation for the loss of their dear ones.

The victims also demanded a White Paper from the Madhya Pradesh government on the expenses incurred on economic, social, medical and environmental rehabilitation.

While the state government had been planning to construct a memorial for the victims of the tragedy at the factory, the victims demanded the Centre declare December 3 as the "Industrial Disaster day".

The victims have also been demanding that toxic waste left at the factory premises be removed as it was contaminating the ground water supply.

The activists said that a rally was planned to offer tributes to the deceased on Saturday.
