BANGALORE: “Corruption within the ruling party in the state is so rampant that deals are being struck within its own fighting factions to lure their own legislators,” said Congress General Secretary Digvijay Singh, at a press conference here on Sunday.  Referring to the infighting within the BLP legislators, he said that the state is in a “very serious situation” and that “compromises are being made” while the government is still struggling to form a cabinet.  The former Madhya Pradesh chief minister opined that if B S Yeddyurappa had taken action against the Reddy brothers, he might have still been in power. However, the senior Congress leader side-stepped the question of Congress’ position in the state. He tip-toed around the illness ailing Congress party chief Sonia Gandhi and only maintained that “she and her family should be given complete privacy” as she recovers from the operation. “And while she is recuperating, she has asked four people to look after the party affairs,” he said dismissing any rumours that Rahul Gandhi is taking over the helm from his ill mother. Keeping any questions on action against Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dixit, following the CAG report on Common Wealth Games tabled in the parliament last week,   he brought the spotlight back on Karnataka chief minister by giving reasons for Lokayukta illegal mining report being more important than the CAG report. “The CAG  looks into government spending and forms the report. It is not an investigating agency. The report will be presented to the government, which will then deliberate on why it has happened. The report only questions the Government’s action and has not indicted the Chief Minister,” he said and added that the Lokayukta has named the former chief minister in its report. Speaking about governance, he said that cases on disproportionate assets of politicians must be put on a fast track to bring the culprits to book and discretionary powers of people in power should be brought down while rules and laws covering governance should be enforced strictly to reduce corruption in the state.
