New Delhi: BJP on Sunday warned the Centre that Delhi will "burn like Seelampur", where four people were killed during a bandh against sealing drive, if the court-ordered programme continues and demanded the convening of Parliament to enact a law to help traders facing action.
A delegation of MCD opposition councillors, which met Union Urban Minister S Jaipal Reddy on Sunday afternoon, also demanded that this legislation should be placed under ninth schedule so that the new law could be exempted from the purview of judicial scrutiny.
The councillors, 13 from BJP and one from Shiromani Akali Dal, said the Government should convene an urgent session of the Parliament before November 1, when the sealing drive resumes.
"Delhi will burn like Seelampur if the government does not come out with a law which could help traders from sealing. The BJP-led NDA coalition has already expressed its willingness to support such an initiative," MCD Opposition leader Subhash Arya, who led the 14-member team said.
Arya said the Government should realise that it would be like playing with fire if it did not do anything before the October 31 deadline.
However, Arya claimed, despite the opposition support the minister did not give any commitment on convening Parliament to enact a legislation. He said the meeting was "not fruitful and the minister not give any positive signals in helping traders".
Arya said the Government should ensure that another Seelampur should not happen again.
