MADURAI: It was Amma vs Alagiri at the swearing -in of the Mayor and councillors of Madurai Municipal Corporation on Tuesday.While taking oath, most of the AIADMK councillors assumed office in ‘Amma’s’ (J Jayalalithaa’s) name. On the other hand, councillors of the DMK took oath of office in the name of the DMK Madurai strongman and Minister M K Alagiri. There were a few who took oath in the name of DMK patriarch M Karunanidhi. V V Rajan Chellappa, who was sworn-in the eighth Mayor of Madurai, signed his first official file to carry out the renovation work at the six corporation schools at a cost of `1 crore. Chellappa told reporters that he had identified six corporation schools neglected by the councils led by the DMK for the past 15 years. “The DMK council failed to improve the basic amenities and quality of education in corporation schools,” he said. The new council would focus on improving drinking water, toilet and laboratory facilities in the schools. Apart from the Mayor, 77 councillors of AIADMK, 12 DMK councillors and one each from the CPM and PMK and eight independents assumed office.
