Kolkata: A day after West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar was forced to leave the venue of the Calcutta University convocation, he described the agitators as "evil forces".
"What happened on January 28 will have very serious repercussions for not just the university but for the entire state," he said. “The domain of teaching and knowledge cannot be compromised in any society, otherwise it sets a downward trend, ultimately affecting the capacity of people at large."
Claiming that lawlessness prevails in the state, Dhankhar said, "If a small group of people creates trouble and is still not booked under law, it is for the people to think. I cannot be a Nero and play the fiddle when Rome is burning."
Nero, the fifth Roman emperor, became infamous for his alleged burning down of Rome.
Dhankhar on Wednesday said he was "totally shaken" and in "excruciating pain".
"The events that took place yesterday didn't happen spontaneously. The Chancellor was forced by an unruly mob to leave the venue, despite him being duly invited," he said at a press conference here.
State Education Minister Partha Chatterjee said the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) does not have any personal issues with the Governor.
"We hope he will maintain decorum of the chair he is occupying," said Chatterjee. "I personally feel that any chair — which comes as a hurdle before the development of any states — should not be there."
Dhankhar was on Tuesday forced to leave before the commencement of the convocation ceremony of the Calcutta University after facing "go back" slogans from students at Nazrul Mancha.
Around 1 pm, Dhankhar had reached CU to attend the convocation, but his convoy was blocked by protesters. They waved black flags and raised "go back" slogans as Dhankhar failed to convince them of his stand on the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and the National Register of Citizens (NRC).
The protesters also questioned Dhankhar's neutrality as Governor, claiming that he was acting on the instructions of the BJP.
