After bleak predictions on the fish production after trawling ban season, fish Catching has finally picked up before Onam, much to the relief of the fishing community. The low production was predicted on account of the scanty rains during the 47- day trawl ban in the months of June and July. However, though the early Monsoon was disappointing, the rains gradually picked up speed brightening the prospects of fishermen. The rains are directly linked to the nutrient cycle of the sea and boosts fish breeding.
Both deep water fish caught by the trawl boat and the surface water fish caught by the traditional fishermen using their boats have recorded an increase in catch. “The catch has picked up substantially after the rains. Sardines and Mackeral are the major catch in the surface water category. Sardines, especially the small fish, are found in abundance along the coast from Fort Kochi to Alappuzha. The high catch is an indication of the effectiveness of the trawl ban because in the years before the ban one hardly found catch like this,” said said Ernakulam district president of the Kerala Swathanthra Matsya Thozhilali Federation P V Wilson.
In the deep sea trawl fish category, squid, cuttlefish and sardines are the major highlights of the season.
The numbers and prices of these too have been picking up. “The catch has been very encouraging in the last few
weeks. The fishing harbours in and around Ernakulam are getting good landings of squids, cuttlefish and sardines.
As squids are fetching good price, sardines are being priced around Rs 80 at the harbour. However, prices of
cuttlefish are relatively on the downward side owing to the recession in the European countries where cuttlefish is chiefly exported,” said Joseph Xavier Kalapurackal, general secretary of All Kerala Boat Owners Association.
