KOCHI: Intense protests and endless agitations carried out by the residents of Cheranalloor have finally borne fruits after the Kerala Water Authority (KWA) took efforts to solve the acute water shortage in the area.“We started receiving water from Saturday. Though the problem has not been solved fully, we are immensely relieved,” said Suresh Babu, president, Cheranalloor Panchayat. However, he added that some parts of Cheranalloor were yet to receive water. “When the KWA officials checked, there was a major leak in the high density (HD) water pipeline passing through a canal in the area. That is why some parts have not received water though the supply had been resumed. We hope the condition improves in the coming days,” he added. The KWA officials said the issue would be sorted out soon. “As of now, we do not know the exact location of the crack. We will find it out using a compressor and then conduct the repair works,” said G Vanaja, Superintendent Engineer, KWA. It has been more than three months since the residents of Cheranalloor have been reeling under acute water scarcity. After many complaints went unheard, the residents started severe protests against the lackadaisical attitude of the KWA officials in resolving the problem. On Friday, a protest march taken out by the residents had turned violent and they had broken the windows of the KWA office and destroyed office files and telephones. The protestors had ended the agitation after KWA officials had assured them that immediate steps would be taken to resolve the issue
