A strike called by local poultry owners in Mumbai is making chicken lovers see red.

New Delhi: First it was bird flu scare that made life difficult for the non-vegetarians, and now it’s a strike called by local poultry owners that’s making chicken lovers of Mumbai see red.

Thanks to the short supply of chickens, digging into a succulent leg of chicken at the local eatery has become difficult for many a Mumbaikar.

"We have been getting barely any consignment of chicken in recent days, as a result of which we are pushing other dishes like lamb and fish instead of poultry-based dishes," manager of Fountain Sizzlers - an eatery in south Mumbai famous for its chicken dishes - Amitabh Chowdhury was quoted as saying by PTI.

A wholesale poultry trader was also quoted as saying that the strike began on March 23 to protest a decision by farmers not to reduce the price of poultry. Said a a wholesale poultry trader in south Mumbai's Crawford Market, Wasim, "Poultry farmers usually decrease prices of chicken following winter since demand is lower in summer. But this time, they refused to do so, which has led to the strike among traders."

The strike has affected sales in retail centres across the southern and central Mumbai.

While negotiations were on to resolve the issue, Most outlets have now resorted to banking on their stock supply to cater to customers to cope with the drastic dip in supply.

Many like a famous Chinese eatery in suburban Bandra has been forced to strike off all chicken items from their menus.
