CHENNAI: The Indian Coast Guard Eastern region has again arrested 10 Sri Lankan fishermen for illegally fishing inside the Indian Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).Just two days ago, the coastal force had arrested 16 Lankan fishermen for straying into the EEZ near Andhra Pradesh border. According to CG sources, anticipating such an intrusion after the 45-day fishing ban period that ended a few days ago, the Coast Guard Eastern region launched an operation involving ships and aircraft to detect infiltration and poaching in the wake of an abrupt increase of fishing traffic in coastal waters.As part of the operation, Indian Coast Guard Ship (ICGS) Avvaiyyar, an inshore patrol vessel, apprehended two Sri Lankan fishing boats (Jaya Isuru (IMUL-A-0882 MTR and Yug Gaya (IMUL-A-0787 MTR) with 10 Lankan fishermen for illegally fishing in Indian waters.These boats were found fishing in Indian waters about 109 nautical miles from Chennai and were caught with about 2,000 kgs of fish onboard late Tuesday. The boats were apprehended for violation of MZI Act 1981 for illegally fishing in EEZ.The apprehended fishermen and their boats were escorted to the Chennai Port on Thursday and handed over to the local police.
