New Delhi: In exactly 17 months, Delhi will be the focus of global attention as it hosts the 2010 Commonwealth Games. But could there be a snag? The President of Commonwealth Games Federation, Micheal Fennell says the 2010 Games construction in New Delhi is behind schedule.
"There are lot of issues regarding the Commonwealth project and the construction is also lagging behind. Some deadlines will not be met. We cannot afford any more slippages. also security is a concern all over the world these days," he says.
Meanwhile, Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit had said on Thursday that the facilities being developed for the Commonwealth Games next year, including the venues and village sites, will be at par with those in premier metropolitan cities across the world.
"Commonwealth Games venues and village sites and their surroundings will be developed in such an attractive and aesthetic manner that they will be at the level of international metropolitan cities," Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit said after reviewing games project preparations.
Pedestrian facilities would be increased and traffic circulation would also be improved to ensure that they become a permanent feature even after the games, she added.
The Public Works Department had made a presentation before Dikshit relating to street-scaping projects around Commonwealth Games venue sites and some important sections on the Ring Road.
The government has plans to upgrade roads as per the International Road Congress (IRC) guidelines and other international standards pertaining to road and traffic management, the statement said here.
