PUDUCHERRY: Think robot and the two images that probably come instantly to mind are Japan and in more recent times the blockbuster ‘Endhiran’, starring the superstar. Going beyond this imagery, the Miracle Community College unveiled a robot for the benefit of its pupils here, on Thursday. The college had a two-pronged objective: generate interest among students in robotics, and drive home the fact that robotics was not the domain of engineering students alone, but that the research and development of robots could be taken up seriously by students of other disciplines too.Lakshminarayanan MLA and A John Kumar, Puducherry municipality vice chairman, introduced the robot to the students at a function held in the college. Lakshminarayanan hoped that the robot would attract the students and encourage them to take up further studies in robotics, which was a fast developing branch of technology. The college is imparting a course in robotics too.Pons Ramesh, one of the persons associated with the robot on display today, said that it could be used for detection of bomb in public places. It was equipped with cameras and sensors to capture images as well.He said that the students of arts colleges could also take up studies in robotics. “It is not the engineering students alone who can research on the subject. If the students of other disciplines, such as arts and science, show interest they can also take it up seriously,” he said.
