CHENNAI: A consumer court in the city has directed Kerala Fashion Jewellery (KFJ), Chennai, to pay a compensation of Rs 25,000 to a customer for charging 20 per cent towards wastage for the jewellery purchased under the Golden Family-Jewellery Savings scheme.Without mentioning anything relating to wastage percentage in the pass-book, claiming 20 per cent over and above the usual 10 per cent, would amount to unfair trade practice, District Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum, Chennai North, held recently. The Forum comprising its president R Mohandoss and member T Kamalakannan, made the observation while passing orders on a complaint from V Jaisankar of Choolai. It also directed the KFJ to pay Rs 5,000 towards cost and to return the matured deposit amount of Rs 27,291 in the form of jewellery at the rate that prevailed on September 8, 2010, by charging only 10 per cent wastage with no other hidden cost or in the alternative to pay the matured amount with interest at 9 pert cent from that day.The forum also directed the KFJ not to continue the scheme in future without mentioning the exact quantum of wastage that was liable to be paid by the individual members and without informing the same to customers at the time of joining the scheme.Lured by the personnel of KFJ, Jaisankar joined the 24-month scheme and remitted Rs 1,000 per month. Under the scheme, he was to be paid Rs 1,500 as bonus and another Rs 1,791 towards interest at the end of the scheme. When he approached KFJ for purchase of gold jewellery for the matured amount of Rs 27,291, the company told him to remit 20 per cent wastage charges which came to Rs 5,460. His requests to charge 10 per cent wastage, or to enable him to purchase gold coins or to return the amount with interest were not heeded. Hence, the present complaint.
