TIRUCHY: In a shocking incident inside the court premises, a 33-year-old man convicted and sentenced to seven years RI, consumed pesticide on Friday, immediately after hearing the verdict, in the presence of the judge, police and public. He later died at the GH here.“I am innocent and the whole case is fabricated”, the man D Gopi alias Marimuthu told the judge and the lawyers present in the Chief Judicial Magisterial Court here, immediately after consuming the poison. Gopi, who arrived from his house, as he had been granted bail in an assault and robbery case in which he was charged, had carried the pesticide bottle in his pocket. The incident triggered tension and chaos inside the court and shocked policemen rushed and grabbed him. They carried him outside and made him to vomit the pesticide he had consumed. The man had taken a monathan bottle from his pocket as soon as the Magistrate Rajasekaran, who heard the case, awarded seven years imprisonment and a fine of Rs 1000. On information, 108 ambulance van arrived and the convict was given first aid. Subsequently, he was rushed to the GH. Later, he died at the hospital. Gopi, a lorry driver of Manamkathan Thottam in Mannarkudi, Tiruvarur district, was arrested on charges of assaulting a businessman Rajadurai of Alangudi, residing at Sanjeev Nagar near Oyamari in Tiruchy, on May 31, 2009. He was also charged with robbing him of Rs 1 lakh. Fort police had registered a case and Gopi was lodged in prison under judicial custody. Later, he came out on bail.
