A day after reports came out of the tragic death of three patients at Co-opeartive Medical College Kalamassery, the situation continues to be grave for the patients admitted to the medical ICU.
According to the patients’ relatives no measures have been taken yet to rectify the situation which allegedly resulted in the death of three persons- Varghese, Pappu and Jayachandran. The three allegedly breathed their last as the oxygen supply provided to them was abruptly cut. According to sources at the hospital, about twelve persons are admitted to the Medical ICU. “Five patients are fully dependent on oxygen with two nurses to monitor them,” they said.
This was also confirmed by Rajesh, the son of the deceased Jayachandran. “There were times my father could not get ample oxygen supply owing to non-availability. Hence I made arrangements. My father was using the oxygen supply which we personally provided,” he said.
He said that the situation in the hospital was such that they could not provide alternative arrangements even for half an hour, if the oxygen supply was cut owing to any other reason. Besides, sources also said that there was only one gas plant attender to meet the needs of the oxygen supply.
The attender has been suspended by the hospital officials. The hospital authorities denied that they were responsible for the deaths. Their version is that the three persons who lost their lives were anyway included in the DIL ( Dangerously Ill)list.
“We include patients in the list only after receiving confirmation from their kin ,” said Dr Mohan P Sam, Medical Director, Co- operative Medical Hospital, Kalamassery.
