CHENNAI: In an instance of corporal punishment gone much worse than it already is, a 13-year-old student was injured in his eye at a school in Thuraipakkam.Deepak, whose eye started oozing blood, was taken by school authorities to a nearby clinic where he was given an injection and medicines. “They informed us over the phone and since I was not present my elder son Dinesh brought him home and called me,” Deepak’s mother M Mahalakshmi said.On confronting the school authorities, she said they refused to reveal the teacher’s identity. The school management brushed off her protests and merely offered to undertake the medical expenditure for the boy’s treatment. Mahalakshmi then took him to a reputed clinic in the area, where three doctors who examined him were shocked to see the condition of the eye. On their advice, she filed a complaint with the Neelangarai police station. “The doctors assured me that they would testify about the injury and asked me to go to the police,” she said. The police, however, were lukewarm in their response. “They have not registered any case. In fact, they are asking me to withdraw the complaint,” she added.
