KOCHI: Following the recent arrest of an agency which was into recruiting people to Afghanistan by promising them to take to the Middle East, the police have been directed to monitor the activities of such fake agents operating in the city. With the number of cheating cases on the rise, the police are all set to monitor the activities of the agencies behind it.The agency that was raided by the police recently used to recruit people mainly from Karnataka and Tamil Nadu by giving advertisements in the newspapers there. When the police raided the office of the agency in Kochi, they seized more than 500 applications from them. The agencies have been recruiting people from other states to evade police action here. According to a top police official, the agents had been recruiting applicants to West Asian countries and then taking them to Afghanistan. The agency had collected `1 lakh from a few applicants who wanted to go to Afghanistan. “The agency which was raided by the police had been operating without a licence. The agencies should have got approval from the Ministry of Human Resources. They neither had a licence from the Human Resources Ministry and the Protector of Emigrants (PoE),” police sources said.The police have also started steps to monitor the other fake agencies operating in the city. “The agencies should have got a certificate from the Home Ministry and Protectors of Emigrants. They should give information in newspapers and should have got the clearance of the police. But many fraudsters are conducting interviews and counselling to recruit the people at various hotels and also over phone. We arrested them after receiving complaints about cheating cases,” a police official said. The police are monitoring these fake agents since more people are likely to be cheated in the city. “We will monitor the activities of the recruiting agencies in the city. The police have been given a directive in this regard,” police sources said.
