Court hauls Apollo docs in Mahajan case
A court issues summons to six doctors of Apollo Hospital. They are charged with destroying evidence in Rahul Mahajan case.

New Delhi: A court on Saturday issued summons to six doctors of Indraprastha Apollo Hospital and two of late Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Pramod Mahajan's aides who have been formally charged with destructing evidence related to Rahul Mahajan's drug abuse case.

Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Kamini Lau directed the doctors - Anupam Sibal, Prasad Rao, Awdesh Bansal, Mukund Pamdey, Ali Mohammed Ganai and Abha Gupta - as well as Mahajan's aides - Sudhanshu Mittal and Harish Sharma - to appear before the court on January 12.

Taking cognizance of the charge sheet filed by Delhi Police for allegedly destroying evidence and giving false information to the investigating agency, Lau directed the police to invoke Section 193 (false evidence) and Section 177 (furnishing false information) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

The charge sheet, among other charges, alleged the doctors abetted Mittal and Sharma to give misleading information to the investigating officer regarding the state of Rahul Mahajan when he was admitted to the hospital in a critical condition following consumption of drugs.

The police have already charge-sheeted Rahul Mahajan under Sections 21 (possession of drugs), Section 25 (allowing premises for commission of an offence) and Section 27 (illegal possession in small quantity for personal consumption of any narcotic drugs).

The case had made headlines when the Apollo Hospital authorities informed the Tughlak Road police station in the early hours of June 2 that Rahul Mahajan had been admitted to the hospital in an unconscious state while his father's aide Bibek Moitra had been brought dead.
