New Delhi: CBI has received from the UK a reply to its judicial request sent in a Commonwealth Games scam case related to alleged cost inflation in laying down turfs for the lawn ball event, paving way for filing of charge sheet. CBI sources said British authorities have sent execution report of the Letters Rogatory which would be used as evidence to buttress the case of the agency.
The probe agency has alleged that cost of laying of synthetic turf was inflated many times. The agency had sought details of material which were transported here for laying the artificial turf. The CBI has alleged that CPWD and DDA officials in collusion with private company Jubilee Sports Pvt Ltd, which had got the contract for laying of synthetic turf, had inflated the cost of synthetic grass and its transportation.
Although the sources refuse to divulge the reply from the UK authorities as it could adversely affect the prosecution case, they said the response has been positive and would bolster the CBI case before the competent court. In 2011, CBI had registered a case against the officials of DDA and CPWD and the private company under various sections of Indian Penal Code and Prevention of Corruption Act in this regard.
"The firm has provided and laid synthetic outdoor flat Lawn Bowl Greens for Commonwealth Games 2010 in which the accused officials of CPWD and DDA allegedly inflated the costs of the contract from the estimate of Rs six crore to Rs 9.88 crore by including allegedly false amounts against its cost, transportation etc," the official spokesperson had said.
Lawn Bowls is a core sport of Commonwealth games which has been part of all the 17 CWG events except the 1966 games at Jamaica. The event at Commonwealth Games 2010 had six competitions for men and women.
