Cyclone Ward weakens at Bengal, to cross TN on Tuesday

Chennai: The cyclonic storm ‘Ward’ over the Southwest Bay of Bengal has weakened into a deep depression and lay centered 400 km southeast of Nagapattinam and 400 km east of Pamban, the MeT office said in Chennai on Sunday.

The storm is likely to move in a westerly direction and cross Sri Lanka early Monday morning before crossing the South Tamil Nadu coast between Kanyakumari and Pamban on December 15, Met officials said.

Rainfall has been forecast at many places, with isolated heavy to very heavy rain falls over north coastal Tamil Nadu and Puducherry during next 48 hours.

Squally winds reaching 55-65 kmph and gusting to 75 kmph are likely along and off South Tamil Nadu coast in the next 48 hours, the weather office said.

The sea would be very rough along and off north Tamil Nadu and Puducherry coasts, it said and advised fishermen not venture out to sea.
