A dalit couple was hacked to death with an axe after they failed to repay a loan of Rs 15 to a local shopkeeper in Uttar Pradesh.

Lucknow: In a shocking incident, a dalit couple was hacked to death with an axe after they unable to repay a loan of Rs 15 to a local shopkeeper in Uttar Pradesh's Mainpuri district on Thursday morning.

The grocery shop owner identified as Ashok Mishra has been arrested. It was learnt that the couple allegedly owed Rs 15 to him and failed to repay the amount.

The incident took place around 6 am when the couple went to the store reportedly to buy some daily household items. The shopkeeper asked for Rs 15 and soon he engaged in an argument with the couple.

Mishra allegedly took an axe and attacked the couple repeatedly till they collapsed on the road. Soon after the incident the local people rushed and alerted the police.

The victims were rushed to a nearby hospital where the doctors declared them dead.

Mainpuri is Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Yadav's constituency and the incident drew severe criticism from the opposition party in the state.
