New Delhi: In Firozabad town, in Western UP, a Dalit woman was burnt alive by upper-caste men on Thursday night.
Jeevan Shri's neighbours, who belong to the Dabang caste, set fire to her after her son eloped with a girl from their caste. Before she died in a local hospital, Jeevan Shri managed to make a statement to the police. Police have now registered a case of murder based on the statement. Jeevan Shri's neighbour Rajbir Yadav, the prime suspect, has run away.
Dalit woman, whose son was accused of eloping with girl of another caste, was burnt to death while her family members were held hostage in Sirsaganj area here, the police said today.
Goons set the woman ablaze in Krishnanagar area of Sirsaganj police station area yesterday, Superintendent of Police VK Garg said, adding that the woman later died in a hospital in Agra.
Two persons were arrested today in this case, Garg said.
Her family members were later freed, he said. Police in strength have been deployed in the area.
IG Kanpur zone S.N. Singh visited the site here yesterday. There were 12 cases of missing persons and recovery of bodies which were yet to be registered with police, he said and gave 24 hours time to the concerned officials to get them filed.
