KOCHI: With only a month remaining for its tenure to be completed, the Empowered Committee on Mullaperiyar has initiated measures to carry out the remaining tests at the reservoir. The panel has already started preparing the draft report. The apex court had earlier given an extended period till April 30 for the committee to submit its final report. The Tomography tests to check the strength of the dam began on Monday. A team of officials from Parson Overseas Ltd in New Delhi has been carrying out the tests. At present, the tests are being carried out based on the directives by Tamil Nadu. Tomography tests, where the strength of the structure is tested by sending electric signals and vibration, are expected to be over in a week. However, the soon-to-be carried out borehole drilling tests are more time-consuming. “Boreholes should be drilled at different points at various heights. Samples are to be collected from here and send for tests. It may take some time, depending on the availability of samples and other similar factors,” officials said. After this, borehole camera tests will be carried out in the dam.“We have already started preparing the draft of the report to be submitted before the Supreme Court. The Empowered Committee will meet on April 22 and 23 to finalise the report. We have decided to include the results of all strengthening tests completed till then,” state’s representative in the Empowered Committee Justice K T Thomas said.
