As many as 8,250 landlines coming under Vellayambalam Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) telephone exchange became defunct with the damage to the optical cable.
The optical cable, passing through Medical College and support the Vellayambalam exchange network, was damaged on Sunday night. All the lines coming under the exchange went dead by 9.30 p.m.
It is learnt that the optical cables were very old affecting the operating systems in the exchange. BSNL sources said that the works to restore the connections started on Sunday night itself.
All the technicians and officials of the T’Puram Secondary Switching Area (SSA) under the optical cable section were pressed into service. The old cables will be replaced with new ones.
BSNL General Manager Jyothi Sankar said that works would be completed on Monday itself. He said that the workforce of BSNL started restoring the damage partially and a section of the connections had already became functional by evening.
Landline connections at Vellayambalam, Alathara Junction, Vazhuthacaud, Kochar Road, Sasthamangalam and Pippinmoodu were those affected. The functioning of several government and private offices in these areas was severely affected.
Many important government offices are located in these areas and they had a hard time on Monday. The banks in these areas having BSNL connections too were affected.
There was partial disruption of the Internet connections also. The core banking system was not affected as there was alternative connection for almost all banks. The mobile connections, however, were not affected.
