Demonetisation: Govt May Extend Exemption on Old Notes by a Week
The government is likely to extend the exemptions window to exchange Rs 1,000 and Rs 500 notes by another week to 10 days for emergency services and basic amenities including fuel and pharmacies, Finance Ministry sources told CNBC-TV18.

New Delhi: The government is likely to extend the exemptions window for Rs 1,000 and Rs 500 notes by another week to 10 days for emergency services and basic amenities including fuel and pharmacies, Finance Ministry sources told CNBC-TV18.

This window was supposed to expire on November 24 midnight. Sources said, the decision was taken after Prime Minister Narendra Modi and finance minister Arun Jaitley held a meeting with senior bureaucrats on Wednesday evening and reviewed the demonetisation situation.

It is expected that more relief for farmers and agricultural sector will announced by the government by evening.

Also, those having old notes can use it at railway ticketing counters, bus ticket counters of government or public sector undertakings and airline counters at airports for purchase of tickets.

"The extension will also be applicable while purchasing LPG gas cylinders, at cooperative stores (Safal, Mother Dairy), milk booths, crematoria and burial grounds, exchange of foreign currency (only by foreigners) up to Rs 5,000, metro rail travel, court fees," Finance Minister sources said.
