MYSORE: The Defence Food Research Laboratory (DFRL), that has the credit of catering to defence personnel serving in higher altitudes with ready-to-eat food, campo pack ration, petrol ration and emergency flying ration packs, is using nano-technology and materials to pack food in polymer sheets.DFRL has given the technology to industries and has come out with self-heating poaching trays, to help soldiers have food at higher altitudes with biodegradable packing technology that can preserve food for 24 hours.DRDO chief controller W Selvamurthy inaugurated the Golden Jubilee of the Defence Food Research Laboratory (DFRL), here on Friday and said that DFRL has come out with dense energy bar, ginger based appetite to check weight-loss problems among soldiers at higher altitudes and also semi-solid foods for pilots.Recalling DFRL’s contribution, he said that it is gratifying to know the contributions, of more than 1,000 publications, 50 patents. He said that the US has has asked to collaborate with DFRL on food processing, in addition to coming up with other safety products.Rs 20-crore Project for Mysore unitSelvamurthy said that the government has sanctioned `20 crore for its new campus for research and development unit, microwave facility for cereals and pulses. Director of Directorate of Life Sciences G Illavazhagan said that DFRL will become the centre of excellence in military food technology. He said pre-cut vegetables will reduce cost of transportation.
