What’s in a name; they are called Jiozi in Beijing, pearl balls in Shanghai or spicy huntuns in Szechuan but for people here these soft steamed stuffed dumplings are momos. These fluffy steamed potlis that are of oriental cuisine origin are fast becoming a rage for people of the Twin city. So if you want to taste a choice of momos then Momo Cafe outlets at the Ekamra Haat, on Keshari Talkies premises and in front of Reliance Fresh outlet in Unit V are the places to go to. Although they do not boast of great interiors, the small restaurants are all decked up for a pleasing, non-intrusive eating experience.Coming to the food, the one that sets your taste buds on overdrive here is the momo - a favourite with the customers.Momos are made with simple flour and water dough. White flour is generally preferred and sometimes a little yeast or baking soda is added to give a ‘doughy’ texture to the finished product. The filling is done with minced vegetables, meat, chicken and assorted seafood along with the fresh spices like garlic, spring onion, coriander, mushroom, bamboo shoots, salt and pepper. Here you get five of them on a half plate and they simply melt in the mouth. The vegetarian momos are perfect. Most momos have their stuffing packed in like a lead pellet, but not here. The covering doesn’t collapse in an apologetic heap when pierced either. The Momo Cafes’ momo holds its own. The stuffing is mild, allowing itself to be overtaken by the spicy chilly sauce and the casing is light and fluffy. The varieties include steamed chicken momo, steamed prawn momo, steamed veg momo (with cabbage and carrot stuffing and capsicum and sweet corn stuffing), steamed paneer momo, fried chicken momo, and fried veg momo, among others. There is a variety for lamb lovers as well. The vegetarian momos, stuffed with onion and shreds of carrot, are as good is their chicken filled counterparts. All the items are served along with generous dollop of fiery red chilli sauce. The steamed dish takes only few minutes to prepare and is easy on the pocket. A half plate of the veg momos are priced at Rs 25 while the non-vegetarian options are available from Rs 30. Other dishes to try out in the Momo Cafe outlets are the fried chicken nuggets, fried prawn and chicken and veg clear soups.
