Walt Disney Co. has tied up with Yash Raj Films to make a series of animated feature films with voices of Bollywood stars.

Mumbai: Walt Disney Co. has tied up with Yash Raj Films to make a series of Indian-style animated feature films with voices of Bollywood stars, the companies said on Tuesday.

The first film Roadside Romeo is about a rich dog that moves from soft beds to make his home in garbage bins after being abandoned on a Mumbai street, said Sanjeev Kohli, Chief Executive of Yash Raj Films.

Disney will be co-producing an animated feature outside the United States for the first time, said Walt Disney's Marketing President Mark Zoradi.

India's entertainment industry is rapidly expanding and demand for animated features is growing fast.

“This alliance begins with animation. It could lead to other collaborations. What we are getting is an understanding of Indian comedy, culture and music. On our own, we could not make an Indian animation moving,” Zoradi said.

Yash Raj Films is one of India's top production companies, credited with some of Bollywood's biggest blockbusters in recent years.

The two companies plan to co-produce one animated film a year and the films will carry the Disney brand.

The first film will be a song-and-dance Bollywood-style film with voices of stars like Saif Ali Khan, Kareena Kapoor and Javed Jafri, Kohli said.

However, both companies declined to reveal investment details. “We are equal partners,” Kohli said.
