What next for the desperate farmers of Dindori district in Madhya Pradesh who made their women folk plough the fields topless to please the rain gods who didn't oblige? Surely not every one will commit suicide.
What about those who were booked for robbing Urea in Ratlam district of Madhya Pradesh last week. Many farmers have committed suicide by consuming urea but again those sacs were not lifted from a goods train to commit suicide. It was a desperate act. What will a farmer who robbed urea from a train do next if the crop failed again? His chances of committing suicide are slightly less than the man who disrobed his wife and made her pull the plough to get rain. And instances of farmers looting and stealing fertilizers are occurring with an alarming regularity, at least in Madhya Pradesh. The previous week it happened in Datia district.
BPO employment for English speaking youth is fine but emaciated frames without a semblance of flesh can also cause havoc. May be not before TV cameras but yes they can sustain themselves in jungles long enough to strike lethal blows at Manmohonomics.
It is about equi-distribution of resources. Bankruptcy notifications with loads stashed in far away banks for some and suicide notes for farmers is not a healthy balance.
The lava is bound to erupt. Every suicide is a beep warning of a discharging battery that sustains the system. Once the battery conks the link between the haves and have-nots would be lost. And then the mandatory police verifications done before hiring the domestic help would solve little purpose.
Rural infrastructure is the key. If hospitals can't be taken to the poor, they have to be brought to the hospitals. Bottled water for the urban elite is not a problem only till the point when the taps flow for the poor. Also electricity is not required for cooling or heating. But yes there has to be a semblance of light.
It's time some one took a serious note of the suicides.
