Dubai: No trace of ecstasy was found in blood and urine samples of leading disc jockey Aqeel, who had been detained at Dubai Airport on Tuesday for allegedly possessing the banned drug, his lawyer claimed on Wednesday.
Unconfirmed reports later on Wednesday said Aqeel has been granted bail by a Dubai court in the case.
Aqeel's lawyer Ashish Mehta said his client was held with 0.4gm of ecstasy drug, which was found in his bag. Blood and urine tests conducted by the police later did not show any trace of the drug. But now, the matter will go to the court, the lawyer said, claiming that Aqeel was not a consumer of the drug.
Aqeel continues to be in police detention. "We will fight the charges in court," Mehta added. Indian consulate officials said they have not been contacted regarding the case.
Aqeel had gone to Dubai for a radio programme on June 3 and his wife reached Dubai later. The popular DJ had arrived in Dubai on Sunday to play at a discotheque, but his detention prevented him from performing before his many local fans here.
Aqeel's wife Farah Khan claimed that he did not use drugs and alleged that "somebody must have planted" the contraband in his bag. She said 0.4 gms of 'ecstasy' drug was found in his bag.
Aqeel was taken in by the anti-narcotics cell of Dubai police after his arrest and tested the DJ's blood. According to Farah, Dubai airport authorities had dismissed the case after a preliminary medical test conducted on him for traces of drugs was proved negative. He was later sent back to the police, which conducted the urine test on Wednesday.
Aqeel, who was travelling alone, was subjected to a body search by Dubai airport authorities. Dubai authorities said they had prior information from Mumbai about the contraband being allegedly carried by Aqeel.
Farah claims her husband does not have a drug history. "We are dead sure it has been planted. We are in the process of finding who has done such a terrible thing," she added. She said Aqeel "performs so much that he falls asleep at airports and I don't know if somebody has put it in his bag."
The disc jockey's mother-in-law Zarine Khan said "my son's stupid so-called friends have planted this.... into his bag and informed the police to have him checked by this bag by this name." Aqeel, who turned 34 last month, acted in a just-released film Ek Chalist ki Last Local.
