COIMBATORE: As private health firms lure childless couples with magical cures and easy pregnancy solutions, gynaecologists are warning people not to fall prey to such gimmicks. The latest bulk SMS that is doing the rounds is from a Chennai-based firm. “Get pregnant faster!! Easy, do it at home with ovulation kit,” reads the unsolicited SMS. When this correspondent approached one such direct selling company, a representative explained: “Using our cassette on the 11th day after the menstrual cycle, women can find out the level of LH (Luteinizing Hormone) in the urine. If one colour band appears during the test it means there is no LH surge and the chances of pregnancy are negative. If two colour bands are visible, the woman will probably ovulate in the next 24-48 hours and it is an ideal timeframe for intercourse.” But she added a rider: “If the woman does not test positive for LH for two months, she has to consult a gynaecologist.” Dr Suma Natarajan, chief gynaecologist, Ganga Women and Child Care Centre in Coimbatore, said testing positive in the LH test was merely an indication that eggs are going to release soon. The exact developments should be monitored as lots of factors influence child birth.
