CHENNAI: The Airport police on Friday arrested a driver working with a travels company after he allegedly stole diamond jewellery worth Rs 12.5 lakh belonging to a software engineer working in the US. Police recovered the stolen jewellery and 2.5 sovereigns of gold that the driver had purchased after selling it.Venkatesan (25) of Ilango Salai in Teynampet stole the jewellery when he dropped the engineer and family at the airport.Sathyanarayanan, the engineer, had rented a car to get to the airport after visiting his in-laws at West Mambalam. He and his family kept their luggage in the car and went to his in-laws’ house, leaving a laptop bag in the passenger seat. The driver saw a jewel box in the bag, stole it and hid it inside the dashboard.The engineer and his family got down at the airport and found the jewellery missing and reported verbally to the airport police. “He told us he would go to the US and check if he had left the jewellery there,” said a police official.He could not find the jewellery in his house in the US and made his co-brother Sundarajan, a scientific officer working at Kalpakkam, lodge a complaint with the police. The airport police questioned Venkatesan who confessed to the crime.The driver further told police that he had sold the jewellery in a jewellery shop-cum- pawnshop at Teynampet and purchased 2.5 sovereigns of gold jewellery for his wife and children. Police recovered both the diamond and gold jewellery.
