CUTTACK: Leaps in medical science have led to significantly higher rate of cure for breast cancer even as early detection continues to be key to successful interventions. Doctors and medical experts have thus begun to stress increased awareness among the people, particularly women, so that they can adopt self- detection techniques and undergo screening at appropriate times. Breast cancer, in fact, is highest in incidence among all cancers afflicting women in the State. According to estimates, one in almost 20 or 22 women is prone to breast cancer, which is a sheer number. The major concern is that in most of the cases, patients report at advanced stages as a result of which cure rate falls rapidly. “In the West about 40 per cent of breast cancers are diagnosed before it assumes a detectable lump through regular screening. In India more than half report at stage III or IV,” said Dr K Panda, programme director of East Zone Association of Breast Surgeons of India (ABSI) and head of Panda Curie Cancer Hospital. The ABSI hosted a two-day breast surgery workshop and training programme here, attended by eminent faculty members from major hospitals across the country. Eight surgeries were conducted to demonstrate the advances in treatment. Doctors, nurses and other medical personnel were also included in the programme at the SCB Medical, Cuttack, and Sum Hospital, Bhubaneswar. ABSI president Dr Devender Patel and secretary Dr P Raghu Ram were present.
