Moscow: Russian and US chemists have added element number 118 to the Periodic Table at Russia's Dubna Institute of Nuclear Research.
Cuba's Prensa Latina news agency reported that sources told the Voice of Russia that it only appears in lab conditions for a few seconds by "bombarding" Californium with calcium ions.
Elements 118, 116, 114, 115 and 113 confirms that there is some stability among superheavy elements, said Russian Academic Yuri Oganesians, a specialist in synthesis in Dubna.
Russia wanted to call it Moscovium but the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry had the last word.
The last chemical element in natural state was discovered in 1925, so subsequent additions to periodical classification started by Russian chemist Mendeleyev are artificial elements.
