CHENNAI: The winners of the Thirukkural Elocution Contest 2011 received cash prizes and shields at the MGR College of Arts and Science for women, recently. Shriram Ilakkiya Kazhagam, the literary wing of the Shriram group organised the Thirukkural Elocution Contest 2011, in the months of July and August, for school and college students in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. The zonal rounds of the contest were held in Chennai, Vellore, Coimbatore, Salem, Tirunelveli, Madurai, Trichy and at Puducherry, in which 1,696 students participated. In the junior level, D Lakshmi Praba of Mount Zion Matric Hr Sec School, Pudukottai (Trichy Zone), won the first prize, which fetched her `10,000 and a shield. S Sneha Sukumar of Space Central School, Sriharikota (Chennai Zone) won the second prize and walked away with `7,500 in cash. M Kamelrex of Amala Matric Hr Sec School, Gobichettipalayam (Kovai Zone) won the third prize to take home Rs 5,000. Prizes were distributed to winners at the senior, super senior and college levels too. Speaking at the event, K Aludaya Pillai, a retired IAS officer, said, “Thirukkural chapters — Ookkamudaimai, Vidaamuyarchi, Vinai Seyal and Arivudaimai — that advocate the importance of perseverance, hard work and intelligence have made a great impact on me. “The dominance of technology in today’s world has given students enough intelligence to have oratorical and communication skills. It is said that 90 crore of the 120 crore people in our country possess mobile phones. It is by using such technology that Infosys Narayanamurthy rose to the level of making turnovers of up to Rs 10,000 crore. Initially, he had ventured into this business with just Rs 10,000,” he added.Shriram Group’s Advisor, Rangarao, IAS (Retd), Shriram Chits’ ED and B Anbu Selvam also participated in the event.
