New Delhi: Enrichment and reprocessing technology is India's sovereign right and nobody is going to deny this to it, former US Ambassador to India Frank Wisner said on Tuesday while allaying concerns in the wake of recent decision of eight industrialised nations to curb the transfer of the sensitive knowhow.
Wisner made it clear that the Obama administration would be no less committed than the Bush government in implementing the civil nuclear deal as per the Hyde Act and 123 Agreement.
"Nobody in the world is going to stand with a 'Stop' sign when India goes in for ENR technology. It is New Delhi's sovereign right," Wisner said during an interaction.
He was seeking to allay fears caused by the joint statement by G-8 countries in L'Aquila in Italy last week in which they vowed to curb transfer of ENR to nations which are not signatory to Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.
Wisner, who now represents Patton Boggs which is the official lobbying firm for India in the US, disagreed with a view that Obama administration would not be too keen to implement the civil nuclear deal with New Delhi.
The Obama Administration is bound by the "laws of the land" such as the Hyde Act and the 123 agreement over civil nuclear cooperation with India, he said.
"I do not share the view that one administration supports India and the other does not. In fact Obama himself voted in favour of the nuclear deal in the Senate," he said, adding "This (Obama) administration has all the markings of
the eight-year run (under George W Bush)."
