Explore the amazing 1458 megapixel image of the Earth at night
The composite image of the Earth at night released by NASA measures 54000 pixels x 27000 pixels and is a 384 MB download.

NASA has released new images of the Earth at night, which have been composed from data acquired by the Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership satellite over nine days in April 2012 and thirteen days in October 2012. It took the satellite 312 orbits and 2.5 terabytes of data to get a clear shot of every parcel of Earth's land surface and islands. The resultant composite image made available for download by NASA is a 1458 megapixel (54000 pixels x 27000 pixels) behemoth TIFF file that weighs 384 MB. An image of such enormous dimensions is unwieldy for online viewing, therefore we used Microsoft's Deep Zoom technology to present you the full composite image of the Earth at night in its full glory (the conversion process took two hours). You can explore the image by zooming and panning using your mouse or the on-screen controls.
